아래의 영문 아티클은 영국런던크리스티에서 홈페이지에 게시한 내용을 회원님들의 영어실력 향상을 위하여 그대로 가감없이 게시하였습니다. 청화백자는 최근 중국에서 고고학자들 사이에 우리가 지금까지 알고있듯이 원대에서 시작된것을 부정하며 송대에도 있었다는 주장이 제기되고 있습니다만, 현재까지는 원대에 일단은 완성된것으로 보는 것이 세계적인 견해입니다. 그래서인지 명대 청대에도 꾸준히 청화백자는 만들어 졌고 더욱 정치해진 면도 없지 않아 있지만, 청화백자가 가진 강렬한 푸른 빛의 질감은 원대의 것이 역시 오리지널이라는 것 때문인지 강렬하며 깊이가 있게 보입니다. 이 자기가 올해 중국도자기로서, 그리고 아시아 예술품중에서 크리스티가 경매가로 최고가를 기록한 원대의 청화백자항아리입니다.    우리나라도 마찬가지이지만 일제시대에 해당하던 시기에 중국에서도 서양과 일본 등지로 많은 예술품이 유출되었는데 이 작품도 그중의 하나였다고 볼 수 있겠습니다. 이작품이 고가를 기록한 것은 물론 완벽한 보존상태도 있지만, 무엇보다도 희귀한점(그림내용)과 청화하면 원대의 청화가 오리지널이라는 것 이 두가지가 함께 작용하면서 모처럼만의 진품으로 인해 조금은 과도하게 경매가 경쟁적으로 된 점 모든 것이 합쳐서 만들어낸 가격이라고 볼 수 있겠습니다. 이야기가 나온 김에 1996년의 크리스티경매에서는 도자기의 단일경매가로서는 세계최고가를 기록한 것이 있었습니다. 다들 아시겠지만 17세기의 조선관요에서 만들어진 조선철화백자용문항아리가 그것입니다. 대략 10년전과 비교하여 중국도자기의 가격을 단순비교하면 가치가 많이 우리나라가 뒤진다고 생각이 들수도 있겠지만, 당시보다 지금 내어놓는다면 훨씬 더 고가를 기록할 가능성도 있음을 상기하시기 바랍니다. 당시의 경매 기록가는 US달러 8,417,500 이었습니다.   1996년 당시 세계최고가기록 100억원대 조선시대 도자기         Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art Christie's King Street 12 July 2005 London - Christie's sold the most expensive Asian Work of Art ever today when an exceptionally rare and important blue and white jar, Yuan Dynasty, 14th century, realized ￡15,688,000 /$27,679,100 / ??22,731,912. After a fierce bidding battle with over six clients vying over the telephone and in the room, the jar was eventually acquired by Eskenazi Ltd for a private buyer. This is not only a world record price ever paid for any Chinese Work of Art, it is also the highest price paid for any work of art sold at Christie's this year. Desmond Healey, Director and Head of Department, said: "We are delighted with this record breaking result. This is an exceptional Chinese work of art, preserved for centuries in exquisite condition, and was a very rare piece to come to the market." Dating from the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368), the rare, and previously unrecorded, blue and white guan jar is finely decorated with a narrative scene in vibrant underglaze cobalt blue. The jar, which depicts scenes from contemporary literature, is thought to be one of only eight to have survived to the present day. Featuring a peony scroll band around the shoulders and a petal band around the base, the jar has vividly painted scenes from the story of the conflict between the states of Yan and Qi in the Warring States period (AD475-221). A figure in a cart, pulled by a tiger and a leopard, follows two foot soldiers running by a stream. Over the bridge is a scholarly figure on a piebald horse looking across a rocky landscape to another horseman. The jar was acquired in China by Captain Baron Haro van Hemert, a keen collector of art, who was in the Dutch Marine Corps, and was stationed in Beijing from 1913 to 1923.
